Sri Lanka snatch victory from Proteas
Charlie Austin - 6 July 2000

For much of this afternoon, the spectators who had crowded into Galle International Stadium sat quietly on as their side drifted towards an apparently inevitable defeat. Then at 4:24 Gary Kirsten tried to sweep Mutiah Muralitharan and was bowled. Suddenly the band started banging their drums with hope, the Sri Lankan flags begun to wave and the spectators awoke from their slumber.

One hour later the same spectators where cheering their team into their dressing room after Sri Lanka had won the match by 37 runs after a dramatic South African collapse in which 10 wickets had fallen for just 62 runs.

The mood of the crowd was mirrored by that of the players who had appeared to have given up hope of winning the match during a 150 run opening stand between Gary Kirsten (59) and Andrew Hall (81). The dismissal of Gary Kirsten though galvanised the team, shook them from their gloom and as the wickets fell steadily, they couldn?ide their undulated joy.

Prior to the match the Sri Lankan?ad opted for three spinners in the expectation that the ball would turn in the second innings. It was a tactic that paid off as the spinners ran through the South African batting.

Kirsten?ismissal was promptly followed three overs later by that of his opening partner. Andrew Hall, in just his third one-day international, had stepped into the shoes of Herschelle Gibbs with aplomb, and had dominated the Sri Lankan spinners, hitting them from three sixes, but was caught and bowled by Upul Chandana.

With the experienced Jacques Kallis (11) and Darrel Cullinan (14) at the crease there was no need for panic but Kallis tried to launch Dharmasena over mid-wicket and was caught by Chandana on the boundary. Suddenly the players and the crowd started to sense the possibility of a victory and the atmosphere in the ground became electric. They believed they were going to win when Jonty Rhodes (0) was caught behind off his very first delivery

The run rate now begun to increase rapidly and Darrel Cullinan (14) was forced into taking the aerial route against Chandana but only succeeded in hitting the ball straight down the gullet of a grateful T.M. Dilshan on the mid-wicket boundary.

Sri Lanka became unstoppable. Mark Boucher (2) and Lance Klusner (20), the Proteas only hope, were both run out by Sanath Jayasuriya. Pollock (5) was caught by Jayawardene, Nico Boje (1) was bowled by Mutiah Muralithran and Ntini was run out to end the match.

Whilst Upul Chandana?our wickets may have won the match at the end, he was only able to do so thanks to batted deeds of Sri Lanka?oungsters: Avishka Gunawardena (47), Russel Arnold (59) and Kumar Sanagakkara (85).

Put into bat, Sri Lanka quickly lost three wickets, including those of Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Attapattu and Mahela Jayawardene. The senior players gone, Avishka Gunawardena and Kumar Sanagakkara counter attacked in dramatic fashion. Sanagakkara may have been lucky to survive an LBW appeal in his first over and Avishka may have played and missed early on with alarming frequency but this in no way belittles their performance.

Like Steve Waugh has done on so many past occasions, they took a calculated risk and in the space of a few overs had wrestled the initiative away from South Africa. They were helped in the cause by some wayward bowling. Mornantau Hayaward?irst four overs cost 40 runs and South Africa bowled a staggering total of 24 wides.

Whilst the Russel Arnold and Avishka Gunawardena may have batted well, it was Kumar Sangakkara who caught the eye. Unfazed by the pressure of the occasion the 22-year-old from Kandy played with a maturity far beyond his years and experience. He played shots all round the wicket, placed the ball quite expertly and was justly awarded the man of the match award. Unfortunately he was stupidly run-out within reach of a well deserved century.

Dav Whatmore was clearly impressed: ?win a man of the match award and come into bat in that situation and play the way that he did in his first one-day international was extremely impressive. The way that he performed was like a veteran and his future looks very rosy.??lt;br>
South Africa were clearly disappointed, so much so that they felt the need to hide inside their dressing room during the presentations. Nevertheless they surely can?e expected to perform at their best straight after a two-month lay off.

Speaking afterwards Shaun Pollock said: ? openers set a great platform for us to get that score and we let them down. We only had to go at five runs an over in the last 20 overs. It just goes to show that the conditions are more difficult than you think. As a fresh batter its quite difficult to get going.??lt;br>
?m not looking to make excuses but we definitely need more time in the middle. We have only played one practice game and the pressures in a practice game and an international one are very different. You realise that the heat is on when you get out here in an international game.??lt;br>
South Africa now travel to Colombo where they take on Pakistan at Premadasa Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa fight back to overcome Pakistan in Singer Triangular
Charlie Austin - 8 July 2000

The road to redemption, after all the treachery that has gone before, will surely be long and hard. However South Africa?ramatic victory here tonight will go a long way towards healing the scars. Looking down the barrel of defeat after an opening partnership of 101 they fought bravely back tonight to eventually beat Pakistan by 18 runs at Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

For much of the match they had looked a shadow of their normal self. The top order had scored runs, but at a rate that appeared too sluggish. Whilst they bowled much tighter than they had in Galle, they lacked penetration and the fire in the belly, which normally burns so fiercely, had appeared to have been doused by the flamboyant stroke-play of Pakistan?9 year old opener.

That fire was re-ignited by Lance Klusner. Brought on as a fifth change bowler he may well lack the pace of his he partners but he made up for it with raw aggression and purpose. He did not bowl bouncers, nor bone crushing deliveries, but he was gun barrel straight and clearly ruffled the young Imran Nazir (80).

Finally, in his forth over and the 30th of the innings, he got his man. Imran Nazir stood up and tried to re-exert his dominance by thrashing Klusner through the covers. He only succeeded in dragging the ball on to his stumps and by doing so paved the way for a South African victory.

Like when the Sri Lankan?ismissed Gary Kirsten in Galle, you could almost see the hope and belief coming flooding back into the player?aces.

The dismissal of Nazir triggered a collapse in which they lost three precious top order wickets for just 10 runs, crumbling from an apparently impregnable 144-1 to 154-5. Azhar Mahmood and Inzamann-ul-Haq were both caught behind off Klusner, Inzamann spectacularly so by Mark Boucher, who has now become the fastest wicket-keeper to reach 100 dismissals in both test matches and one day internationals. Yousef Youhana was then tamely bowled behind his legs as he tried to sweep Boje.

Pakistan were never likely to recover, especially without their talisman, Wasim Akram, who has returned to Lahore. Moin Khan was adjudged LBW four overs later when Pollock re-entered the attack and Abdur Razzaq suffered a similar fate, this time to Boje, who spun the ball prodigiously towards the end and picked up 4 wickets.

Whilst Younis Khan (38*) remain undefeated to the end, he lacked the necessary support at the other end as the wickets quickly pushed the run rate above 6 an over. Waqar Younis (3) was caught in the deep whilst trying to sweep Boje and Mustaq Ahmed (2)was brilliantly caught by a diving Jonty Rhodes at short short extra cover.

Earlier in the day the Shaun Pollock had won the toss and elected to bat first. For the second match in succession the openers rallied to the captains cause and put on 64 for the first at nearly five runs per over before Abdur Razzaq trapped Andrew Hall (27) LBW.

After the fall of the first wicket the runs slowed as Jacques Kallis (83) and Gary Kirsten (52) found it harder to work the bowlers into the gaps. Kirsten was the quicker of the two, adept at placing the ball into the gaps, he had scored 52 from 77 deliveries before trying to hit Mustaq Ahmed over the top and being caught at long off.

The arrival of Darrel Cullinan (38) at the crease increased impetus to the innings, putting on 61 with Kallis in just 13 overs. When he was run-out after some fleet footed work on the boundary by Azhar Mahmood, it looked as though South Africa might fall short of a competitive target.

In the event their final score of 241 proved enough despite the performance of the Pakistan openers who started cautiously before taking the attack to the South African pace bowlers. Mornantau Hayaward once again suffering in the early overs, although he came back well in the later part of an expensive spell.

Speaking afterwards Shaun Pollock was clearly relieved: ?weren?atisfied with our performance against Sri Lanka so it was nice to come and put in a good performance here, we can still improve in a few areas but it is definitely something from which we can work from.??lt;br>
?an Nazir batted very well up front when the ball was new but we knew from the batting that as the ball got a little older, it held up a little bit and was a more difficult to score off. We always felt that if we could keep control then we would be able to pull them back later and in the end it worked.??lt;br>
Pakistan will now face a tough fight to qualify for the final and are desperately in need of a victory tomorrow against Sri Lanka. The same wicket is to be used tomorrow and the prospect of facing of Mutiah Muralitharan on it, is sure to be daunting.

Muralitharan spins Sri Lanka to historic victory
Charlie Austin - 23 July 2000

With the monsoon rains not forthcoming for the South Africans, the Galle test match came to a predictable but nevertheless historic conclusion. For the first time in the history of test cricket, Sri Lanka defeated South Africa. On a pitch that could not have suited Mutiah Muralitharan more, they won by an innings and 15 runs. Mutiah Muralitharan picking up a staggering 13 wickets for 171 runs.

South Africa and Sri Lanka have only played against each other in two three match test series: in Sri Lanka in 1993/4 and in South Africa in 1997/8. During that period South Africa have won 3 games but had not previously been beaten. In this game though they were thoroughly outplayed and this represents the Proteas heaviest defeat since losing by an innings and 21 runs to Australia in Sydney in 1997/8

This test series was always going to be harder than the 1993/4 tour. Primarily because Mutiah Muralitharan was just a young sapling back then. While he still turned the ball prodigiously, he lacked the beguiling variation, which has so confounded the South African batsmen in this match.

One doubts whether they have ever faced better spin bowling. He has developed his top spinner, a delivery that few batsmen can read, a mystery ball, that deviates away from the bastmen. In addition he subtly changes the line and length, varies the pace and even adjusts the degree of spin.

On a surface that has turned from the first day and further disintegrated since, no batsmen in the world could play him with certainty. Darryl Cullinan, who had played so brilliantly yesterday admitted as much: ?ot of the time it is a bit of a guessing game. He tries a lot of variations and is always changing his length and his line. He has got this top spinner at the moment, which he bowls a lot more. You need a lot of luck. Lets be honest I could have been out three or four times. But to bat against a bowler like Murali on a wicket like this you need that luck.??lt;br>
Speaking afterwards Muralitharan was typically modest: ?m really happy but the main things is that we got 522. When you have so many runs it makes it much easier to bowl. On a pitch like this you just have to make sure that you bowl line and length, be patient and build up the pressure.??lt;br>
With Gary Kirsten being so senselessly run out on the previous evening, few people expected South Africa to be able to bat out today, let alone Monday as well. During the first ten overs the batsmen, Darryl Cullinan (12) and Jacques Kallis (40), had appeared quite comfortable.

Inexplicably Jacques Kallis felt the need to sweep Upul Chandana from off stump, immediately after cutting the bowler for four, and offered Mutiah Muralitharan the simplest of catches at short fine leg. It precipitated a collapse, four wickets falling for 24 runs.

Muralitharan claimed the next three. In the very next over Darryl Cullinan popped up a bat pad catch, which was brilliantly caught by Russel Arnold diving forward at silly point. Lance Klusner (4) tried to cut and was well caught by Kumar Sangakkara and Mark Boucher (7) was adjudged LBW not playing a shot to the top-spinner to leave South Africaon 163 for 6.

Jonty Rhodes (63*), a man who had defied Muralitharan for an entire day in the first test match in 1993/4 and by doing so saved the series, came to the crease and played a bustling innings. Heavily reliant on the sweep shot he was also fleet footed and neutralised the spinners well by coming down the wicket.

He had put on 30 runs with his captain before South Africa suffered their second piece of bad luck. Shaun Pollock (12) given out bad pad when television replays showed that the bat had played no part. But this was not as bad as Peter Manuel?ecision against Nico Boje (35).

Having valiantly resisted for over an hour, an eighth wicket partnership of 70 runs, he was wrongly adjudged LBW when no playing no shot to Muralitharan, the Umpire needing to guess as to whether the ball would have hit the stumps. It marked the end as Paul Adams (2) and Makhaya Ntini (0) were all at sea against Mutiah and were quickly bowled.

Whilst the focus inevitably fell to Mutiah Muralitharan in the aftermath, the fact remains that Sri Lankan batsmen scored 522 which ensired their dominance. The return to batting form has been nothing short of spectacular. After two woeful performances against Pakistan the top order, with the exception perhaps of Russel Arnold, is now full of confidence.

Sanath Jayasuriya spoke of the change in the dressing room: ?er losing to Pakistan we all felt very down and were short of confidence but in Kandy we turned the corner and then gained a lot of confidence in the Singer triangular. We are now playing good cricket and really enjoying ourselves.??lt;br>
South Africa though clearly have problems. The post Hansie era was never going to be easy, but there is the suspicion that fighting spirit and mental hardness that has characterised South African cricket over the past last few years has been more severely eroded than previously imagined.

South Africa refuse to lie down and die
Charlie Austin - 2 August 2000

Seldom can a team have so stubbornly refused to lie down and die. In a pulsating test match and a nerve racking final day, South Africa won a match that they had appeared certain to lose 48 hours before. By doing so they have leveled the series and set up an intriguing decider at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Sunday.

The match had twisted and turned throughout with ever increasing frequency. Nevertheless each day appeared to end with Sri Lanka on top and few commentators expected a South African victory. Forced to chase 177 for victory Sri Lanka were bowled out for 169 to lose the match by just seven runs.

On Tuesday morning Sri Lanka had a seven run lead with six wickets remaining and two in form batsmen at the crease. The South African fast bowlers then fought back by instigating a dramatic late order collapse and claiming the last six wickets for just 22 runs.

Having lost early wickets in their second innings, Jacques Kallis and Jonty Rhodes, kept their hopes alive with a 71-run partnership before Sri Lanka snaffled two key wickets, minutes before the close of play last night.

Beginning the day just 137 runs ahead with two wickets remaining Nicky Boje mustered 27 crucial runs in a 45 run partnership with Paul Adams to leave South Africa with a defendable lead of 176 runs.

The fast bowlers then ripped out the rump of the Sri Lankan top order, reducing the home side to 22 for four, before Arjuna Ranatunga (88) played perhaps his most brilliant innings ever. Reaching his half-century in just 36 balls he plundered the South African attack to all parts of the ground.

South Africa though still refused to give in and with Sri Lanka needing a mere 47 runs for victory with six wickets remaining, Boje, dismissed Russel Arnold (40). Sri Lanka once again collapsed losing their last six wickets for 39 runs and were left an agonisingly short of victory.

This was a test match that will long be remembered in these hilly areas. The partisan spectators had crowded into the ground today in festive mood. Every run of the chase was jubilantly cheered, every South African mistake hooted in mockery. The poor boundary hoardings became impromptu drums and were thrashed incessantly.

When Muralitharan was adjudged caught behind off his very first ball to seal South Africa?ictory, the crowd?assion was transformed into anger with the umpires. Darryl Harper, a jovial man who had admittedly made some chronic errors, was distastefully subjected to a torrent of verbal abuse and hailed with plastic bottles as he returned to the sanctuary of the pavilion.

When Tony Greig tried to present the man of the match award, a deafening chant of ?ryl Harper, Darryl Harper?owned out the adjudicator?oice. They were placated somewhat when their favorite cricketing son, Arjuna Ranatunga, was jointly nominated man of the match with Lance Klusner.

The award was well deserved by both parties. Lance Klusner for his composed century in the first innings and for some miserly off cutters from a five pace run-up. It was a strategy that had been concocted only in the last week. With the wickets here so slow and yet very receptive to the tweak of a the wrist, he was able to fulfill a vital role.

When Arjuna Ranatunga was running riot in partnership with Russel Arnold and the game was slipping quickly away from his team, Lance Klusner, reined them back in with his dibbly dobblies. Bowling unchanged from the Hunnasgiriya End he conceded just 34 runs from his 13 overs and took two valuable wickets: Kumar Dharmasena (1) at short leg and Upul Chandana (16) cleaned bowled with the first ball after tea.

Arjuna Ranatunga (88) had earnt his slice of man of the match cheque with a half century in the first innings, an innings that was so unjustly terminated, and a bristling 88 today. The hairs on his head may be becoming distinctly grey but the eyes are still clearly razor sharp.

His batting in recent times has been of the dogged kind, the type that suggested his skills had been blunted by the passage of time. Perhaps now unburdened after announcing his retirement, he batted with unrestrained freedom and breathtaking skill.

Both Marvan Attapattu (0) and Sanath Jayasuriya (0) had been uncontroversially adjudged LBW off their very first deliveries. Mahela Jayawardene (1) had nervously flashed to the keeper in the same over and then Kumar Sangakkara (5) was caught off a leading edge to leave Sri Lanka on 22 for four.

Less doughty cricketers would have crumpled under the pressure. Arjuna though has seen most things before, didn?are a hoot for Sri Lanka?ire predicament and just played his natural game.

Russel Arnold (40) held up the other end, enjoying the rare sight of watching one man totally dominant an attack. Paul Adams was brought on immediately after lunch and was promptly thrashed for 26 runs in three overs, one of which was a maiden!

Shaun Pollock dutifully returned to restore some order but was greeted with consecutive boundaries; as clean a straight drive as you can imagine and a sweetly timed flick off his pads. Kallis was cut and Klusner was driven imperiously. He hit 15 boundaries and one all run four, as rare an occasion as one can hope to see.

When he was dismissed in the 44th over, three minutes before the tea interval, caught by Rhodes at short leg off Boje, Sri Lanka needed 17 runs with three wickets remaining. Chandana was bowled with the first ball after tea, Chaminda Vaas (5) was cruelly run out with 9 runs to go and then Muralitharan (0) was caught behind of the very next delivery to end a truly great test match.
